For organizations
OSVolunteer is for a group that needs people at set times: a fair's gates and barns, a league's concession stand, a school's reading buddies, a pantry's distribution day. Everything below is in the repository's README.
What volunteers do
- Find a shift by program, see when, where to meet, what they'll do and what to bring, and how many places are left right now.
- Sign up with a name and an email address, optionally a phone and a note. No account and no password.
- Keep their private link: it shows their sign-up, adds it to a calendar and cancels it. Only a fingerprint of the link is stored, so it can't be sent again.
- Send their hours after the shift, and ask for a statement of their approved hours by email (the link works for 24 hours).
What coordinators do
- Sign in with an emailed link, or a passkey added on their account page: a fingerprint, face, PIN or security key.
- Add programs (with the place, access for volunteers, a minimum age and a partner's page) and shifts (with the places needed).
- See who's coming and who's waiting, cancel a sign-up, download the list as a spreadsheet file.
- Change a published shift's date, times or places; the reason they give is shown publicly with the change.
- Cancel a shift with a reason; everyone on it is told.
- After a shift, mark who came and who didn't, approve hours volunteers sent, and enter hours for walk-ins.
Accessible
Every page is checked against WCAG 2.1 A and AA on every change, at desktop and phone widths. Pages run no script except on the coordinator sign-in and account pages. Each program says what access volunteers can expect, such as step-free routes and seated jobs.
What it doesn't do yet
- Volunteers don't have accounts: each sign-up has its own private link.
- The demo sends no email. Your own copy sends confirmations and reminders once your domain is set up for sending (Cloudflare Email Sending, or Amazon SES).
- The steps to run your own copy haven't yet been rehearsed by someone new.
